Bed Types
Divans:
A divan– essentially an upholstered box, fitted with castors for mobility, or on legs to create storage space beneath. All of our divan beds are manufactured in the UK and can be custom made if you have a specific size or would prefer legs to castors. The bonus with a divan is that it can provide valuable storing space in the form of drawers so these are ideal where storage is limited. They're unfussy and allow for an optional headboard if desired. Think about choosing one to co-ordinate with your other bedroom furniture. There are a few permutations involved which are outlined below.
Sprung edge divan base. The sprung edge divan base provides extreme luxury. As the name implies the springs come right to the edge giving real edge to edge support
Platform top divan base. The top of this divan base is solid and padded, to enhance mattress support and provide a firmer bed. One of the distinct advantages of a divan bed is its enclosed base that allows the use of drawers to store bed linen or other goods.
Firm-edge divans have a smaller number of larger, heavy-duty springs within a rigid, wooden-sided frame.
Bedsteads – These can come in many different styles and made from metal or wood. Any mattress can be used to complete the bed but some mattresses are specifically designed for a bedstead. Bedsteads come in various options which are explained further. Bedsteads come in flat pack easy for tight stairs access during home delivery and can be assembled in the room of choice.
Metal mesh base - this is generally the economy choice it is sometimes used for children's beds where the base may need to withstand an abnormally high level of rigorous treatment. It is simply a metal wire base that is interwoven and laid across the bed frame, and is very firm. Slatted base - Traditionally this was the base type used on wooden beds, the (usually) solid pine slats are laid across the bed frame, in bigger beds there will be a central spine that runs the length of the bed with two sets of slats in each half of the bed, they will make the overall feel of the mattress slightly firmer as they are solid slats of wood and are not responsive to weight and pressure. Rod base - This is basically `slats' which are made from metal rather than wood and is the least common type of base on a bedstead
Sprung slatted base - rapidly becoming the most widely used form of base for bed frames. They are typically made from Beech and are very slightly bowed which allows a responsiveness that isn't found on solid slatted bases. They make the overall feel of the mattress slightly softer due to the spring effect and are the best types of frames for prolonging the life of the mattress, due to the `give' effect caused by the bow in the slats removing some of the initial pressure from the mattress.
Bunk Beds\Childrens Beds
With us, every bedtime is an adventure. We offer a wide range of bunk beds, cabin beds, mid and high sleepers that are great for space saving and lots of fun, too. And whatever materials they're made from, all our beds meet the highest safety standards.
Children's beds come in four main types. High sleepers and bunk beds usually come with a mattress included, whereas cabin beds and mid sleepers generally have a choice of mattresses available.
Mattress types explained
There are four mattress types
- Pocket sprung mattress
- Open sprung
- Orthopaedic
- Foam'
Each mattress type has its own merits and some types of mattress cannot be successfully used with some types of bed, so please ask for our advice if you're not sure. The firmness of the support provided by a bed base can be further adjusted by the firmness of the mattress used in combination with that base. Mattresses come in four grades of firmness: medium, medium firm, firm and extra firm (sometimes called 'orthopaedic').
Pocket sprung mattress
The most luxurious in feel, offering ideal body support and comfort. Individual pocketed springs are linked together in a honeycomb pattern. They move individually as they compress and expand enabling them to adjust separately to your body shape and weight.
Open Coil Sprung Mattress
The open springs are all hinged together preventing spring noise and spreading the bodyweight evenly over the complete surface of the mattress. Some spring systems offer twice the number of springs providing a denser sleeping surface than traditional Bonnell open coil spring units.
Orthopaedic mattress
An orthopaedic mattress is a bit of a misnomer really. Essentially, it's an extra firm mattress - and that could be too firm for your needs!
